Floating Market in Dal Lake
Description
The floating market in Dal Lake (Srinagar, Kashmir) is one of the most unique and picturesque experiences in India.
It takes place early in the morning, around 5–7 AM, when dozens of colorful wooden shikaras (boats) gather in the middle of the lake. Local farmers sell freshly picked vegetables, fruits, and flowers directly from their boats, creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere on the water.
This centuries-old tradition reflects Kashmir’s rich culture and lake-based lifestyle. Tourists usually reach the market by shikara ride from their houseboat or ghat, and while it is primarily a wholesale market for locals, visitors love to witness the charm, photography opportunities, and authentic Kashmiri experience.
👉 Best time: Summer mornings (April–October) when the produce is abundant.
👉 Tip: Go as early as possible, since the market wraps up quickly after sunrise.
